Balance and Vestibular Center
Raleigh Neurology offers a state-of-the-art Balance and Vestibular Center, which offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment of dizziness, vertigo, and balance disorders. Our clinicians have successfully completed competency training in vestibular and balance disorders. Balance is a vital part of our everyday lives. Compounding balance and dizziness can cause profound disruptions to patients. To determine what is causing the problems, Raleigh Neurology offers a Computerized Dynamic Posturography. A CDP is a series of testing procedures to evaluate the patient’s sensory system (vision and touch), the ability of the brain to interpret this information, and the function of the muscles and joints to perform movement and maintain balance. All procedures are painless and results are automatically recorded by the computer.
Raleigh Neurology Pediatric Therapy Services
Raleigh Neurology Rehabilitation is now offering comprehensive pediatric services. Physical and Speech Therapy services include: Neurodevelopmental treatment, sensory integration, orthotic management, seating and mobility, augmentative communication, assistive technology, and speech, language, and oral-motor treatment. Our therapists are highly specialized and have many years of experience treating the following patient populations: cerebral palsy, spinal bifida, prematurity, torticollis, autism spectrum disorders, sensory processing disorders, feeding disorders/dysphagia, pediatric orthopedics, brachial plexus injury, various types of developmental delay, Down syndrome, and various types of genetic syndromes.
Audiology
Comprehensive audiograms, tympanometry to test middle ear and acoustic reflexes. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR or BAER), acoustic nerve to brainstem testing, and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP’s) are offered as painless procedures for a complete audiology examination. Tinnitus counseling is offered with information about treatments; evaluate possible exacerbating factors, and self-help methods and equipment.
Electronystagmography (ENG)
Electronystagmography (ENG) is used to evaluate people with vertigo and certain other disorders that affect hearing and vision. Electrodes are placed at location above and below the eye to record electrical activity. By measuring the changes in the electrical field within the eye, ENG can detect nystagmus (involuntary rapid eye movement) in response to various stimuli. If nystagmus does not occur upon stimulation, a problem may exist within the ear, nerves that supply the ear, or certain parts of the brain.
Videonystagmography (VNG)
Videonystagmography (VNG) is also used to evaluate people with vertigo and dizziness. However, instead of attaching electrodes to detect nystagmus, video and analysis is done to detect abnormalities. This is the preferred method of testing because it can give your doctor a more accurate reading in most cases. This method also takes less time for setup and is more comfortable for the patient.
LSVT Voice Treatment for Parkinson’s and Dysarthria
The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment Program is an effective and intensive voice treatment program that restores oral communication in individuals with Parkinson’s disease beyond what current pharmacological and surgical interventions can offer. LSVT has been studied for over 15 years and is considered the first speech treatment with Level I evidence for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Patients, family members, and professionals report that patients are more effective, emotionally engaged, and successful communicators after LSVT Treatment. Our speech language pathologists, specially trained and certified in LSVT methods, are able to provide patients with the most effective and innovative voice treatment available.
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Therapy
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Therapy for treatment of Dysphagia (swallowing disorders) is now available at Raleigh Neurology! Electrical stimulation is used to aid muscle strengthening and rehabilitate the swallow. The sensory stimulation provided by this therapy also helps muscle recruitment and swallowing function. Swallowing therapy of this nature is typically done in one hour sessions 3-5 days a week for one month. Our Experia system offers the latest technology in NMES and is more comfortable for patients.

Patients can also order wheelchairs and accessories customized to their measurements, assuring improved security and mobility.
Speech and Swallowing Therapies

VitalStim Therapy is an extremely effective type of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for patients with swallowing disorders from stroke, Parkinson’s, MS, ALS, and other neurological disorders.
Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing Study (FEES)
With difficulty eating foods and liquids, Dysphagia can place you at risk for food or liquid to enter the windpipe and lungs. Dysphagia can result in a variety of health problems including: dehydration, malnutrition, and lung infections. The FEES study is a safe and relatively painless procedure that can easily be performed in an outpatient setting to safely and effectively evaluate swallowing. The test is used for both adults and children, and it provides real time images of patients’ swallow function and airway management. During the FEES study, a specially trained speech language pathologist will pass a small, flexible scope with a camera attached to the end, into the middle of the throat so that the airway and voice box can be seen. The patient is asked to swallow liquids and foods to evaluate the safety of the swallow. Images can be seen during the study are recorded so that they may be reviewed later for improved accuracy. The FEES is performed in the comfort and privacy of an outpatient office setting and no patient preparation is needed to complete the study. Our speech language pathologist will work with your doctor to determine if changes such as modifications to your diet, posture changes, or swallowing therapy services are needed to maintain your health.
