History of Raleigh Neurology

One of the largest and most respected neurology practices in the southeast, Raleigh Neurology Associates, P.A. has grown in its twenty-seven year history to a thriving neurology practice providing comprehensive neurological care for over 250,000 people in our community. While our increased size enables us to offer highly-skilled specialists in many different neurological areas, we strive to maintain the same personal patient/physician relationships on which our practice was founded in 1983.

Our 40,000 square foot facility, conveniently located near Rex Hospital and Wake Medical Centers on Sunday Drive, offers patients full neurological care, therapy services, and an on-site sleep center.

Founded in 1983, by Dr. Keith L. Hull, Jr. and Dr. S. Mitchell Freedman, the practice was originally located in Raleigh's North Hills area on Computer Drive. The offices moved around the corner to Merton Drive as the group expanded.

When the practice outgrew its second quarters, we moved to Lake Boone Trail across the street from Rex Hospital. In 2001, several neurologists of Cedar Neurology joined our practice.

Today, with one of the largest child neurology practices outside a university setting in the region, Raleigh Neurology now offers five full-time pediatric neurologists, a developmental pediatrician, and a pediatric nurse practitioner. The group's child neurology care is led by Dr John D. Wooten, who joined the practice in 2000. Dr. Sara Winchester joined the practice in 2010, and now practices pediatric neurology at our Durham office.

Our neurodiagnostic capabilities have increased under the leadership of Dr. Richard Tim, who joined the practice in 2000. Our staff of licensed technologists works with him to perform nerve conduction studies, electromyography, electroencephalography, and evoked potential studies. Our pain management capabilities have also increased under the leadership of Dr. Pavan Yerramsetty.

Raleigh Neurology's fully-certified sleep center, led by Dr. A. Thomas Perkins, offers state-of-the-art sleep studies in our nationally-accredited sleep medicine program. Backed by the resources and expertise of this staff, the Sleep Medicine Program is a comprehensive, full-service clinical facility providing state-of-the-art capabilities to treat a wide range of sleep disorders. Our sleep medicine services are now offered at our Durham office under the leadership of Dr. S. Thomas Kirk.

Our physical therapy division (adult and pediatric) rehabilitates patients with a wide variety of neurological disorders, including peripheral neuropathy, Parkinsonism, multiple sclerosis, and spinal disorders. Tom Davis, LPT, launched this initiative when he joined the practice in 2004.

Raleigh Neurology's staff includes physicians’ assistants who work closely with the physicians at the hospitals and nurse practitioners who complement the physicians in the office practice. These talented professionals offer continuity of care here at Raleigh Neurology Associates.

New Building Topping-Off Ceremony

On October 31, 2001, we held a topping-off ceremony for our new headquarters on Sunday Drive in Raleigh. After having an official ground-breaking a few months earlier, the topping off ceremony gave the physicians and employees a chance to see the new facility framed and gave us an idea of how our new space would feel.

At this event, all of the staff signed a central steel support beam (see photos below) that is located in our main lobby area. This official 'signing of the beam' signified our unity as a healthcare team and continued commitment to our patients.

Other photos include the 2 founding physicians, Keith Hull and Mitch Freedman, management and construction teams, the physicians of Raleigh Neurology, each with their own 'golden shovel,' as well as a photo of our complete staff at the time of the event.
