Meet the Physicians

Keith L. Hull, MD, FAAN* Keith L. Hull, MD, FAAN*

Keith L. Hull was born in Des Moines, Iowa and raised in the Midwest. He received a BA in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University in 1972, and a medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1975. Dr. Hull completed an internship in medicine and a residency in neurology at Duke University Medical Center from 1976 to 1979. He then completed a fellowship in neuromuscular diseases at Duke University Medical Center in 1979. Dr. Hull became board certified in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1982. He achieved fellowship in the American Academy of Neurology in November of 1989, and was elected as a Fellow of the American Heart Association in 2007. Dr. Hull co-founded Raleigh Neurology Associates with Dr. Freedman in 1983. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Neurology and Movement Disorder Society. Dr. Hull has been involved in the following areas of community service: Former Chapter President of Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1983-1985; former member of Wake County Human Services and Environmental Services Board, 1989-2004; Chairman of the Wake County Board of Mental Health Development Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services, 1993-1995; founder of CASA, which is a nonprofit corporation seeking to provide affordable housing in Wake County, CASA Board member since 2005, and Chairman of the CASA Board, 2006-2008; founder and medical adviser for the Parkinson’s Center of Raleigh, which is a nonprofit agency devoted to educating and supporting persons with Parkinson’s disease.

S. Mitchell Freedman, MD, FAAN* S. Mitchell Freedman, MD, FAAN*

The son of a family physician and a nurse, Dr. Freedman was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He received a BA in psychology from Haverford College in 1968, and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1972. From 1972 to 1976, he completed a medical internship and a three-year neurology residency at Duke University Medical Center. From 1976 to 1978, he served as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps at Womack Army Hospital at Ft. Bragg. Dr. Freedman has practiced neurology in Raleigh since 1978, and co-founded Raleigh Neurology Associates with Dr. Hull in 1983. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Freedman holds a faculty appointment as Adjunct Professor of Neurology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He has taught medical students, interns, and residents from UNC for over twenty years. Dr. Freedman is an active member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers and has been involved with the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in many different capacities throughout the years. Dr. Freedman and his wife have two sons and two grandchildren. In his spare time he enjoys classical music, opera, art, gardening, and the Carolina Hurricanes.

Michael H. Bowman, PhD, MD, FAAN* Michael H. Bowman, PhD, MD, FAAN*

Dr. Bowman was born in Ironton, Ohio. He attended Ohio University where he received both BS and MS degrees. He continued his education at the Ohio State University where he earned a PhD and graduated cum laude with an MD. Dr. Bowman completed a surgical internship, neurology residency, and clinical neurophysiology fellowship at Duke University. He has held faculty appointments at the Ohio State University and Duke University. He is board certified in neurology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Bowman has chaired and served on many committees while in academia, and also during the private practice of medicine and neurology. Locally, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and has chaired the physician sub-committee for Operation Stroke in the Triangle Area. He has served as President of the North Carolina Neurological Society and has been involved at a national level with the American Academy of Neurology in the development of national practice policies and standards, as well as chairing the Academy’s State Affairs Committee. Dr. Bowman is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Association of Anatomists, Society of Sigma Xi, American Clinical Neurophysiological Society and Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, as well as national, state and local medical societies. He has been listed yearly in Best Doctors in America since 1996. Dr. Bowman has conducted basic scientific and clinical research, and is the author of a number of publications in scientific literature and several book chapters. Dr. Bowman has practiced general medicine, emergency medicine, and neurology. He has been with Raleigh Neurology Associates since 1989.

William G. Ferrell, MD William G. Ferrell, MD

Dr. Ferrell, a Raleigh native, received a BS in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After receiving an MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University, Dr. Ferrell remained in Winston-Salem, where he completed an internship in medicine and a residency in neurology at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Before returning to Raleigh to join Raleigh Neurology in 1990, Dr. Ferrell completed fellowships in neuromuscular diseases and neurosonology at Bowman Gray. Board certified in neurology since 1991, his professional memberships include the American Academy of Neurology and the American Society of Neuroimaging. Dr. Ferrell is currently serving as President-Elect of the North Carolina Neurological Society. He has been listed yearly in Best Doctors in America since 2001. In 2012, Dr. Ferrell completed the Leadership College Scholars Program sponsored by the North Carolina Medical Society. Dr. Ferrell serves on the North Carolina Medical Society Legislative Cabinet as well as on the board of North Carolinians of Affordable Health Care. He is also currently serving as President of the North Carolina Neurologic Society.

A. Thomas Perkins, MD, PhD A. Thomas Perkins, MD, PhD

Dr. Perkins was born in State College, Pennsylvania and grew up in rural Indiana. He received a BS in biology in 1985 from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and an MD from the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) in 1991. While at NEOUCOM, in conjunction with Kent State University, he also completed a PhD in neurobiology, studying the electrophysiologic and pharmacologic mechanisms of learning and memory. After an internship at Akron City Hospital, he completed a residency in neurology as well as a fellowship in epilepsy and sleep medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Perkins is board certified in neurology and doubly board certified in Sleep Medicine through the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, subspecialty in sleep medicine. Dr. Perkins joined Raleigh Neurology in 1997, where he developed and now directs the Sleep Medicine Program, which has the distinction of being nationally accredited since 2002. Dr. Perkins is actively involved in the clinical research of sleep disorders and epilepsy, and enjoys opportunities to lecture on sleep related topics and for publication his research.

David A. Konanc, MD David A. Konanc, MD

Dr. Konanc, a triangle native, was born in Durham and raised in Chapel Hill. He received a BA in chemistry from Duke University in 1988, and an MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1992. In 1993, he did an internship in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. From 1993 to 1996, he completed a neurology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He then completed a clinical neurophysiology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale. Dr. Konanc is board certified in both neurology and clinical neurophysiology. He received the 1998 Golseth Young Investigator Award for original research in clinical neurophysiology in 1997, and has been a neuroscience selective faculty member of the UNC School of Medicine’s Neurology Department. Dr. Konanc’s clinical interests include peripheral neuropathies, neuromuscular diseases and the use of botulinum toxin (Botox®) in the treatment of neurological diseases. Dr. Konanc joined Raleigh Neurology in 1997.

Richard W. Tim, MD Richard W. Tim, MD

Dr. Tim was born and raised in California. He received a BS from Stanford University in 1982, and an MD from the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine in 1986. Dr. Tim completed a neurology residency and a fellowship in electromyography and neuromuscular disease at Duke University Medical Center. From 1991 to 2000, he served as head of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic at Duke and director of the EMG laboratory at the VA Medical Center in Durham. Dr. Tim joined Raleigh Neurology Associates in 2000, and is currently the director of the Nerve Conduction Study and Electromyography Lab. At Raleigh Neurology, Dr. Tim only sees patients for Nerve Conduction Studies and EMG.

Kenneth M. Carnes, MD Kenneth M. Carnes, MD

Dr. Carnes, a native of California, received his undergraduate degree in neurobiology from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island in 1984. He then earned a combined MD/ PhD from Washington University in St. Louis in 1992. Dr. Carnes completed an internship in internal medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, followed by a residency in adult neurology at Washington University Medical Center, where he also completed a fellowship in stroke rehabilitation and electrodiagnostic studies. He is board certified in neurology, and has been with Raleigh Neurology since 2001.

Susan A. Glenn, MD, PhD Susan A. Glenn, MD, PhD

Dr. Glenn, an Oklahoma native, received a BA from Central State University, a PhD in biological psychology in 1989, and an MD in 1993 from the University of Oklahoma. She completed an internship in medicine at the University Hospital in Oklahoma City, and a neurology residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She then completed a fellowship in electroencephalography, electromyography, and clinical neurophysiology at the University of Iowa in 1998. Dr. Glenn is board certified in neurology and joined Raleigh Neurology in 2001, where she practices general adult neurology. She was awarded the teaching award at Wake Med as Clinical Faculty Teacher of the Year in 2001-2002. Dr. Glenn has been very active with the National MS Society and has participated in Camp Carefree for children of patients with MS.

Patricia Naslund, MD Patricia Naslund, MD

Dr. Naslund, a Connecticut native, received both an undergraduate degree in 1990, and an MD in 1994 from Duke University. She completed a residency at Washington University in St. Louis in 1998. Dr. Naslund then completed a fellowship in electromyography with additional training in neuromuscular disease in 1999 at Washington University. Board certified in neurology and electrodiagnostic medicine, Dr. Naslund specializes in peripheral neuropathy. She is a member of the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, and the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Naslund has been practicing in Raleigh since 1999 and joined Raleigh Neurology in 2001.

Pavan Yerramsetty, MD Pavan Yerramsetty, MD

Dr. Yerramsetty was born and raised in India. He graduated from the Gandhi Medical College at Osmania University in 1990, and completed a medical internship at Gandhi Hospital in 1991. He then completed a surgical residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, followed by a neurosurgical fellowship at the New York Medical College. Dr. Yerramsetty completed a neurology residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis from 1996 to 1999, and then completed a stroke fellowship at the University of Tennessee from 1999 to 2000. He went on to complete another fellowship in pain management and headache at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2000 to 2001, following which he joined Raleigh Neurology Associates. He is board certified in both neurology and pain medicine, and is an active member of the International Headache Society and the American Society of International Pain Physicians. Dr. Yerramsetty practices general adult neurology with special interests in pain management. He is also one of the founders and current President of Triangle Indian-American Physicians Society.

Rhonda W. Gabr, MD, PhD Rhonda W. Gabr, MD, PhD

Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Dr. Gabr earned a BS in microbiology and biochemistry from North Carolina State University in 1987. After college, she did basic scientific research at GlaxoSmithKline studying sumatriptan, which was eventually marketed as Imitrex for migraine. She earned a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology in 1993, and an MD in 1998 from West Virginia University. Dr. Gabr completed a medical internship and neurology residency at Duke University Medical Center in 2002. She joined Raleigh Neurology in 2002 and became board certified in neurology in 2003. Dr. Gabr is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Gabr practices general adult neurology, including management of migraine, Botox therapy for migraine, epilepsy, stroke, neuropathy, and dementia.

John D. Wooten, III, MD John D. Wooten, III, MD

Dr. Wooten, a Garner native, graduated from Duke University in 1980 with a BS in chemistry, and earned an MD from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1984. He completed a pediatric residency at Keesler Air Force Base from 1984 to 1987, following which he completed a neurology residency with special qualifications in child neurology at Bowman Gray. From 1992 to 1997, Dr. Wooten practiced child neurology in the United States Air Force, and practiced as a child neurologist at the Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, from 1997 to 2000. From 1992 to 2000 he served as part of the faculty for pediatric residency programs at Keesler Medical Center (United States Air Force) and for Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. Dr. Wooten started the child neurology division at Raleigh Neurology in January of 2000. He is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the UNC School of Medicine and is active in teaching, training, and instructing nurses, medical students, residents, and other physicians. Dr. Wooten has received the “Teacher of the Year Award” on three separate occasions over the past fifteen years. He is board certified in neurology with special qualifications in child neurology. He currently practices all aspects of child neurology, and he started the Sports Concussion Clinic for adolescents at Wake Medical Center in 2009

Kevin M. Rathke, MD Kevin M. Rathke, MD

A clinical researcher focused on epilepsy and headache, Dr. Kevin Rathke received an undergraduate degree from Augusta College and an MD from Mercer University School of Medicine. After training in pediatrics at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, he went to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was a fellow in child and adolescent neurology as well as neurophysiology/epilepsy. He joined Raleigh Neurology in 2002, and is the Director of the Electroencephalography lab.

Kristi L. Milowic, MD Kristi L. Milowic, MD

Dr. Milowic was born in Hawaii, and as a child of a military family, she was raised “all over.” She earned a BA in biology at the University of Texas at Austin in 1982, and an MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1988. She completed her medical internship with the United States Navy in San Diego, and continued through two tours of duty as a Naval Flight Surgeon in Brunswick, Maine and Corpus Christi, Texas.  Dr. Milowic completed a Residency in Pediatrics at UNC and is board certified in developmental and behavioral pediatrics after completing a two year fellowship at the Clinical Center for Development and Learning at UNC. She joined Raleigh Neurology in 2002 as a developmental pediatrician, and has a special interest in Autism and ADHD.

Traci I. Sheaffer, MD Traci I. Sheaffer, MD

Dr. Sheaffer was born in Asheville, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1991 with a BA in journalism and mass communications. After her undergraduate education, she worked for several years in Greenville with Burroughs Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline) on projects involving scientific research documentation. She then earned an MD at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1998. Following medical school, she was an intern and resident in medicine and pediatrics at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, and also completed a residency in child neurology at UNC. She joined Raleigh Neurology in 2003, and became board certified in child neurology in 2004. Dr. Sheaffer practices child neurology at Raleigh Neurology and is actively involved in the pediatric teaching service at WakeMed.

Gregory M. Bertics, MD Gregory M. Bertics, MD

Dr. Bertics was born in Evanston, Illinois and was raised in suburban New Jersey. He received an undergraduate degree and an MD from Duke University.  He then completed a medical internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Bertics completed a neurology residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and Beth Israel Hospital, which are all Harvard Medical School affiliates. Dr. Bertics also completed a fellowship in electromyography at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was board certified in neurology in 1987, and has been in clinical practice in Raleigh since then as a general neurologist who sees adult patients. Dr. Bertics has worked both in a solo practice, and as a member of Raleigh Neurology Associates, which he joined in July of 2005.

Matthias M. Zinn, MD Matthias M. Zinn, MD

Dr. Zinn was born in Marburg, Germany. He received an undergraduate degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and an MD from University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA. Dr. Zinn then completed training in pediatrics at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida, and a pediatric neurology training at UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Zinn has worked as a Hospital Lab Technician, Pathology Department Research Assistant, Public School Teacher, and Clinical Instructor at both UMASS Medical School and UNC School of Medicine. He enjoys teaching medical students and residents in his current work. Dr. Zinn is board certified in neurology with special qualification in child neurology.

Ugo Goetzl, MD, FAAN* (Retired) Ugo Goetzl, MD, FAAN* (Retired)

Dr. Goetzl was raised and schooled in the Northeast and has lived in the Triangle area for over 30 years. He had a private neurology practice in Durham for 29 years prior to joining Raleigh Neurology Associates in January of 2008. Dr. Goetzl completed his neurology residency at Duke University Medical center and is board certified in both neurology and psychiatry. He was active in the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, where he served as the chair of the clinical advisory committee, and also as a trustee of the board. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and is an inductee of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Hall of Fame. Dr. Goetzl retired in December of 2012 and is now enjoying his retirement in the Raleigh area. Dr. Goetzl's patients are being referred to the remaining physicians in our Durham office, who each share Dr. Goetzl's dedication to exceptional neurological treatment and care. Syndee J. Givre, MD, PhD Syndee J. Givre, MD, PhD

Dr. Givre, a New York native, graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook as valedictorian. She earned both an MD and a PhD in neuroscience from the Medical Scientist Training Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Givre trained in Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and completed a fellowship in Neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.  Dr. Givre is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Leslie H. Boyce, MD Leslie H. Boyce, MD

Dr. Boyce was born and raised in New Jersey. She graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in neurobiology and behavior, and she received an MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Boyce completed a pediatrics and neurology training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, and then spent a year there doing basic scientific research on cortical development. She moved to North Carolina with her family in 1996, and served as an Assistant Professor of Neurology, Division of Child Neurology, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1997 to 2009. In addition to board certification in pediatrics and neurology with special qualification in child neurology, Dr. Boyce became board certified in sleep medicine in 2007.

S. Thomas Kirk, MD S. Thomas Kirk, MD

Originally a native of Texas, Dr. Kirk received an Honors Program University Scholar BA degree from Baylor University, subsequently receiving his MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch and then completed his neurology residency at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He fell in love with North Carolina while completing his sleep medicine fellowship with additional epilepsy training at Duke University Medical Center in 2010, making him one of the few board certified and fellowship-trained sleep medicine specialists in the area. He currently developed and serves as the Medical Director of the Raleigh Neurology Sleep Medicine Program in Durham and sees patients with any neurologic or sleep concern in both our Durham and Raleigh offices. He is board certified in both neurology and sleep medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Kirk keeps an informal, independent educational website for his patients at www.sleepneurology.com.

Bradley J. Robottom, MD Bradley J. Robottom, MD

Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Dr. Robottom received a BS in Anthropology, magna cum laude, from the College of Charleston Honors Program. He then earned an MD from the Medical University of South Carolina. From 2004 to 2008, Dr. Robottom completed an internal medicine internship and neurology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Systems where he was recognized as Chief Resident of the program.  He then completed a movement disorders fellowship at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, where he received extensive training in the management of Parkinson's disease and tremor disorders. In 2009, Dr. Robottom was appointed to the faculty at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine.  He practices general neurology with special interest in the use of botulinum toxin (Botox®) for neurological disorders and deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor.  He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the Movement Disorders Society.  Dr. Robottom was honored with the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Award in 2007.

John R. Scagnelli, MD John R. Scagnelli, MD

Dr. Scagnelli specializes in Multiple Sclerosis and Adult Neurology at Raleigh Neurology's Durham and Raleigh offices. Dr. Scagnelli received his BS in Human Development from Cornell University in 2002. He earned his MD from the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine in 2006. He then completed his Neurology Residency at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital. Following this he was awarded a National Multiple Sclerosis Society Fellowship to study the clinical care and research of patients with multiple sclerosis and related disorders at the University of Virginia. Dr. Scagnelli is a member of the National MS Society and the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Scagnelli is thrilled to be a part of the Raleigh Neurology team and looks forward to providing exceptional neurological treatment and care to members of the Triangle community.

Danielle A. D. Wyant, MD Danielle A. D. Wyant, MD

Dr. Wyant graduated Cum Laude from Duke University with a B.S. in Biology and Psychology with a concentration in Neuroscience and a minor in Spanish. She earned her MD in 2005 from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Wyant completed a residency in pediatrics, and from 2009 to 2012, she completed a residency in child neurology, both at Duke University Medical Center. Between her general pediatric and child neurology residencies, Dr. Wyant worked as a pediatric emergency physician at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she gained valuable experience in many areas of child neurology. Dr. Wyant is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Pediatrics and is board certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is also board certified in Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology. Dr. Wyant joins Raleigh Neurology Associates as a pediatric neurologist who is fluent in both English and Spanish. Dr. Wyant began treating patients on Tuesday, September 4th, 2012. She is primarily based in our Durham office but treats patients in our Raleigh office on a limited basis.

Uma Raghunathan, MD Uma Raghunathan, MD

Dr. Uma Raghunathan received her Medical Degree from Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College in Pune, India. After receiving her MD, she traveled to New York where she held an Internship in the Department of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She then completed her Residency in Neurology at SUNY Health Sciences Center. Dr. Raghunathan went on to complete a Fellowship in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Upon completion of her clinical training, Dr. Raghunathan joined the staff at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Massachusetts as a Neurologist specializing in the treatment of adult neurological diseases. During her tenure there, she gained valuable experience providing outpatient neurological care, and in 2007, she was awarded the Baystate Medical Practice Award for Outstanding Patient Satisfaction. Dr. Raghunathan joins Raleigh Neurology as a part-time general adult neurologist and is now seeing patients our Durham office.
